I've always heard of Overhead Costs. People and businesses talk about them all the time. I never fully appreciated it until today, though. I called a popular Do-It-Yourself-Type-Home-Repair Store today to find out how much I will need to save up to buy shingles for the south side of my home. JUST the south side of my home. Only.
Their bundles cover 33 square feet, and each bundle is a mere $22- $25. Sounded reasonable. I even have some money saved up just for this cost. Then I did the math. My home is 15 feet from the peak to the edge of the roof. It is 78 1/2 feet long (give or take a couple of inches). That means it is roughly 1178 square feet. Using that measurement I was able to determine it would take 36 bundles to cover just the south side.

I think we only spent $400 to redo my whole house in Washington. Check around for better prices.
Wait a month or so, and I will come down and help you.
Cheaper than having it done for you! :)
Thanks, Stick! I was hoping you would say that. I still have to figure out where I can buy shingles, though. That cost was WITHOUT labor. I think the cost with labor is several thousand dollars!
BTW, my word verification is "cancan." It must be trying to tell me something....
When one of my daughters and her husband were remodeling their house she walked into a home materials store and asked them what their very best deals were, including materials that were being phased out because they weren't "in style", and she got an older style shingle at a very reduced price. She said it was okay, because she had an older home, and you don't even notice the roof now it is done. It looks fine. But the longer you wait to fix your roof, the more expensive it will be.
Any idea which store she went into?
Will your insurance not cover it at all? I'd call them and call them everyday until they called back. Then if they said I waited too long, I'd tell them how many times I tried. It's worth the effort.
I already called my insurance guy. He is a good friend, and he said this is not covered in my policy. I will talk with him again and see exactly what the details are, but my deductible may be high enough to not matter....
